The Andela Standard: Network Entrance Assessments

PHP Developers are instrumental in crafting, enhancing, and sustaining backend applications using PHP. Working collaboratively across teams, they ensure the effective integration of backend components, optimize application performance and resolve intricate challenges.

  • A commitment to continuous learning and adapting to evolving technologies in the PHP backend development domain.
  • A collaborative and team-oriented approach to backend engineering projects.

2. Skill Validation

This qualification assessment tests the candidate's knowledge of backend development and PHP fundamentals. It's composed of Q&A and code challenges that evaluate the candidate theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills.

A candidate is approved in this test if all challenge level cut-off scores are met.

PHP Fundamentals

This challenge tests candidate familiarity with PHP and should be suitable for mid-to-senior candidates. Most of the questions are derived from PHP certifications and some inspired by frequent PHP interview questions.

SQL

This challenge tests candidate knowledge of SQL and associated best practices. Question difficulty ranges from basic to intermediate, so the challenge should be suitable for any experienced SQL practioner. Most of the questions are derived from SQL certifications and some inspired by frequent SQL interview questions.

PHP Code Challenges

The first challenge of this assessment involves debug code which should interleave values in a nested array structure. Candidates will read and debug existing code. Should pass the inplace sort array by reference rather than by copy.

The second challenge of this assessment involves creating ASCII art by arranging the words in a string in a cascade pattern. This is an intermediate level problem that requires the candidate to do string and array manipulation.

3. Technical Interview

During the assessment, candidates will tackle a hands-on problem tailored real-world scenario in PHP development. Their solution will be frist verified by a battery of automated test cases to ensure it meets the functional requirements as well as industry standards. Then, our experienced interviewers step in to assess the overall efficiency of the candidate's solution.

PHP Coding Challenge (Option 1):

The first challenge of this assessment is an basic-to-intermediate problem that involves writing a GET request to hit an API and determine if a word is misspelled. It tests a key skill: whether a candidate can make a HTTP request in PHP, parse the JSON response and grab a value from it.

The second challenge of this assessment is a debugging problem. The candidate shoud correct the PHP function so that it returns the expected results.

PHP Coding Challenge (Option 2):

This is an intermediate-level problem that evaluates the candidate's competency to write a function that will parse markdown headers written in ATX style and return the appropriate HTML output. The purpose of this challenge is to assess a candidate's skills with regular expressions. The solution should be a fairly simple regular expression which will show that the candidate understands the basic concepts. Ideally capturing groups, the escape and wildcard character, and both lazy and numeric quantifiers will be utilized.
