Today's tech ecosystem is characterized by innovation, collaboration, sharing of resources, application of new technologies to drive growth, and transformation and the honing of technological talent.
According to EY, ecosystems are critical in accelerating transformation and maximizing value. The concept of a "global ecosystem" may seem broad; however, in the tech sector, a collection of ripples started by individuals or organizations can end up impacting a larger ocean, and right now, a lot of those ripples are happening in Africa.
Africa is a hotbed for technological talent and is home to the fastest-growing population of developers. For over a decade, Andela has been at the forefront of training, nurturing and developing these talents.
One of the ways Andela is doing this is through its Andela Technical Leadership Program (ATLP) in Rwanda, in partnership with the Rwanda Ministry of ICT and Innovation.
Skills to thrive in a global, remote world
The Andela Technical Leadership Program (ATLP) is a nine-month career accelerator program focusing on helping Rwandan software engineers build a solid foundation in web development and teamwork essentials and providing them with the technical and soft skills needed to become world-class technologists.
The program teaches trainees core concepts, including essential web technologies, version control and best practices. They have the opportunity to be part of team projects, work with distributed teams on real-world products and practice new technical skills. The program also simulates real-world workplace scenarios, systems and processes to prepare trainees for real-life work environments and culture.
Accessible resources for learning and development
Trainees registered under the ATLP get access to online resources and close mentorship from experienced software engineering managers and a community of passionate software developers who support each other through every step of their journey. It also introduces them to a remote-first approach to work that fosters strong communication skills in a distributed setting.
Real-world knowledge application
Andela recognizes the value of real-world experiences and giving technologists a strong career start.
Within the ATLP, trainees are matched with local and international apprenticeship opportunities that allow them to be embedded within real companies for 14 weeks and utilize their knowledge by building customer-facing products.
Creating a bedrock for far-reaching impact
The positive experiences of the trainees are foremost, and the goal of the ATLP is to have a long-term, far-reaching impact on technologists' careers.
Trainees who complete the program develop the technical and professional skills demanded by the global marketplace, gain the technical skills needed to start their careers, access Andela's pool of technical mentors and fast-track their pathway to employability as software engineers.
Many trainees have attested to the program’s life-changing impact.
ATLP participant Muhoza Yves said his voyage through the Andela Technical Leadership Program was extraordinary, fueling his passion for innovation and equipping him with the tools to thrive in the fast-paced world of software engineering. He noted that the program set the course for his growth as a world-class software engineer.
Another participant, Umwari Rachel, said as a developer and a leader, her goal is to use her newfound knowledge and abilities to impact the technology industry positively.
Since its launch in 2018, the ATLP has empowered more than 3,200 Rwandans, including 500+ world-class developers fully trained within the program, 2,500 introduced to software development through short-term projects, and an additional 200 software developers whose training will be complete by December 2024.
Through intensive learning, ATLP trainees master the professional and technical skills they need to succeed as software developers with the world's top engineering teams.
