Andela and CNCF Team Up to Give the $11.8B Kubernetes Market 30,000 New Players

Eliza Power and Ibrahim Kabiru

Over the past decade, Kubernetes has emerged as the definitive standard for managing cloud-based applications. Today, 60% of organizations, including industry giants like Google, Microsoft, and IBM, rely on its capabilities. The global Kubernetes market, currently valued at $2.11 billion, is set to skyrocket to $11.8 billion by 2023. But as this technology becomes indispensable, the shortage of skilled cloud-native developers grows increasingly urgent.

A recent CNCF study found that nearly 55% of developers landed new jobs after completing training and certification courses, and almost 67% felt more engaged and fulfilled in their roles as a result. Yet, a staggering 81% of developers say that high training costs are a serious barrier to certification. The demand for expertise is surging, but access to crucial training isn’t keeping pace.

For engineers and developers in Africa and beyond, the barriers to top-tier Kubernetes training and certification are more than just personal setbacks; they’re a challenge to global progress. Major tech giants are pouring resources into emerging talent not just to bridge skills gaps locally, but to fight an unprecedented worldwide shortage of technical expertise. When these barriers persist, they disrupt careers and hinder the flow of fresh ideas into the global innovation ecosystem. The stakes are high: opening access to high-level training in emerging markets isn’t just about opportunity for a few. It’s a critical lever for fueling worldwide technological advancement and keeping the pace of innovation alive.

This is where Andela’s partnership with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) comes in. Our collaboration isn’t just about unlocking new opportunities for African technologists to thrive; it’s about helping to solve the global skills shortage.

Expanding the Global Kubernetes Talent Pool by 30,000

In collaboration with CNCF, Andela launched an ambitious plan to train 30,000 African technologists in Kubernetes over the next three years. The Kubernetes African Developer Training Program isn't just a simple training initiative. It's a hands-on, certified pathway to expertise that empowers technologists with the real-world skills needed to excel in the global tech ecosystem.

And the demand is evident. Within just three weeks of the program’s launch, over 7,500 applications poured in. Thousands of aspiring tech experts are eager to pursue Kubernetes certifications, including the Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA) and Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) tracks.

Creating Market-Ready Kubernetes Experts Where Tech Needs Them Most

Kubernetes has become a critical competitive differentiator in modern tech stacks. With 60% of organizations now dependent on Kubernetes infrastructure, the talent shortage has become a significant business bottleneck. Fortune 500 companies and agile startups alike are competing for professionals who can architect, deploy, and optimize container orchestration systems that deliver business-critical applications at scale.

This initiative strategically addresses this market gap by developing specialists with enterprise-grade Kubernetes capabilities. These 30,000 African participants emerge not just with baseline skills, but with the advanced expertise needed to immediately drive technical implementation and optimization across complex cloud environments.

Our talent development approach focuses directly on high-demand enterprise capabilities:

  • Enterprise-caliber training assets: Participants master the same Linux Foundation curriculum used by leading tech companies, with industry-recognized certification credentials that validate their expertise for immediate deployment.
  • Strategic technical focus areas: The curriculum targets the highest-value skills—including advanced architecture, automated orchestration, monitoring systems integration, and hardened security protocols—capabilities currently in shortest supply across global tech organizations.
  • Implementation-ready methodology: Through a blend of technical mentorship and practical application experience, these specialists develop the problem-solving capabilities required to execute complex Kubernetes initiatives from day one of engagement.

Changing The Way the World Works with Skilled African Technologists

Andela’s Kubernetes African Developer Training Program is redefining what’s possible for global enterprises and aspiring technologists alike. By investing in world-class upskilling and strategic industry partnerships, we’re not only preparing candidates to enter the workforce, we’re also equipping them with the skills to lead it. Certified through rigorous, industry-backed curriculums, learners emerge as recognized experts, helping to fill talent gaps and setting new standards for excellence in the cloud-native ecosystem.

The power of upskilling is best seen through the success stories of our learners. Take Nairobi-based Ezekiel Mogaka, for example. By completing Kubernetes training through Andela, he secured a dream role as Senior Cloud Engineering Manager at Equity Bank and is thriving in his new environment. Similarly, Omotayo Ikudayisi, based in Nigeria, used the skills gained through our CNCF partnership to land a prime opportunity as the Deputy Data Analytics Manager at Baobab Microfinance Bank. These are not isolated achievements, but tangible proof of a broader shift in the tech landscape. By bridging opportunity with ambition, Andela is powering the next generation of cloud-native experts and delivering scalable, adaptive solutions for the world’s most complex challenges. Partnering with Andela means accelerating growth, not just for your business, but for the future of global technology.
